History

Thinking that I could not write the history of DESAM alone, I asked the founding members of DESAM, with whom we set out together, to convey their feelings. Their desire was to create a common text, but I think it would be more accurate to reflect our feelings separately.

In this long and arduous journey on which I embarked with my colleagues 5 years ago, our target was especially young researchers. Our end goal was to bring basic teachings such as the notion of science, scientific ethics, and project and article writing on the one hand, and to bring to light the academic potential of Near East University on the other.

Adopting the elimination of all situations constituting an obstacle to research as its fundamental mission, DESAM has enabled many projects to be implemented under its own roof, with its cell culture laboratory and molecular laboratory, while continuing its educational activities.

Interdisciplinary research has always been important and encouraged at DESAM, where many research groups work together. The time to step outside of the field of health had already come. Physicists, mathematicians, engineers, physicians, dentists, geneticists, microbiologists, anatomists, pathologists, and biochemists had already come together under the umbrella of DESAM.

And finally, an Institute has come into being from this structure, the name of which is known and therefore will not be written down at length: DESAM Research Institute.  A common purpose exists under one roof, and it is the address of those who believe in walking on the bright path of science...

We knew we would get to this stage. We were volunteers. What we didn't know was the speed with which this would be accomplished.

In the summer of 2015, DESAM was established as a research center in the field of health. The time had come; we are an institute today. This is the short story; by recruiting mathematicians, physicists, medical doctors, pharmacists, and engineers into its body: it has evolved into an organizational structure focused on different research groups and visionary issues. We want to build bridges from here and move on to an international corporate structure. Our existence will not only consist of ourselves but will also encompass our surroundings; we must say that our scientific fuel will not be filled independently of this. We think that we will find a response in the idealistic world of every academician.

While we are going through difficult times, we will continue on our way without being isolated from the functions of universities such as knowledge production. Producing science will be our pursuit; the ethos of science is our lantern.

We cannot forget the "intellectual" defined as "exile, marginal, alien" as Homo Academicus; we have to leave an academic climate in this "remaining dome" to those who come after us.

Having been planned to be established as the research team within the body of Near East University, the Experimental Health Sciences Research Center (DESAM) came into being at the end of May 2015, and held its first event titled "Project Writing Training Course in the Field of Health” in June in the same year. On this path, where we set out with a team embracing producing and sharing science as a fundamental objective since the first day of the establishment and believing that science increases as it is shared, it was inevitable that the center, which provided cooperation with different disciplines and was growing with national, international and intercontinental collaborations and working groups, turned into an institute.

Scientific environments, research opportunities, and original ideas only come from teams that work in harmony. While taking concrete steps on this path, only compatible teams can provide a harmonious environment where ideas can be shared freely, different disciplines can come together and address a problem from different aspects, and the purpose is to produce and feel excitement while producing.

We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the establishment of the DESAM Research Institute, which is open to everyone who has these ideas and will provide a contribution, sets an example to new generations, and ensures the sustainability of science.
